What is worry? Is it good for us, what did God say about it and how do we break free from it?

Worry is a state of anxiety and uncertainty over actual or potential problems.

Here are some of the underlining questions people are asking as they worry…

  1. How am I going to make ends meet?

  2. How do I deal with this financial situation? Bills are due, not enough to cover them

  3. I hope my children are ok or they turn out okay.

  4. I hope my husband or wife is ok, I hope he or she don’t leave.

  5. I need a better job; will I ever get over the disappointment? Will I ever get well?

  6. It may be one thing or the other, what are your worries?

Due to the dynamic and uncertain nature of the culture we live in many great people including Christians are living in a state of worry and anxiety. If I may ask…

What situation do you have in your life that is so uncertain that you do not know what to do?

The effects of worry:

According to medical Community, worry releases stress hormones that over time begin to wear on your heart. Worry can make a person to likely have high blood pressure, heart attack or even stroke.

Worry causes disruptions in your sleep, exhaustion, lack of focus, muscle tension irritability and many damaging situations in our body.

What did God say about Worry?

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Matthew 6: 31-35 (NIRV) So, don’t worry. Don’t say, ‘What will we eat?’ Or, ‘What will we drink?’ Or, ‘What will we wear?’ 32 People who are ungodly run after all those things. Your Father, who is in heaven, knows that you need them. 33 But put God’s kingdom first. Do what he wants you to do. Then all those things will also be given to you.

Philippians 4: 6-7 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Don’t worry about anything BUT pray about everything.

Recommendations to deal with worry:

If you are serious about getting rid of worry in your life, make the decision and take the following steps

  1. Make a list of all the things and situation you are worried about

  2. Classify the list into two categories: the things and situation within your control and the ones beyond your control

  3. Write the word “me” in front of the ones within your control (The ones you can do something about)

  4. Write the word “God’ on the ones that are beyond your control (The ones that you cannot handle on your own)

  5. Create a plan to start doing something on the things and situation you can control

  6. Take the ones beyond your control to God in prayers.

Here is an example of what you may be able to control: if you need a better job, maybe you ought to think about bettering yourself first, attempt to work on a better qualification first…

However, an example of what is not within your control may be related to the decisions and actions of others. Your kids are acting out or things not going the way they should with a loved one…or a diagnosis, we can pray and believe God for his intervention here.

James 1:5-8 MSG

If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.

James 1:4-9 New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)

And you must allow this strength to finish its work. Then you will be all you should be. You will have everything you need. If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault. But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around. They shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord.

But How can you pray to God, if you don’t have a relationship with him, the reason most people don’t pray or reach out to God is that they think they are too far gone for God, no you are not. God wants to help you.

Call on him today, not only will he save you, but he will also deliver you from worries.
